# Video Recording

> Record entire quiz sessions for comprehensive review.

In addition to periodic snapshots, LMS Proctor can record the entire quiz session as video for comprehensive review.

## Overview

Video recording captures:

* Full screen content throughout the quiz
* Webcam feed (overlaid or separate)
* Optional audio from the microphone
* Synchronized timeline with anomaly markers

## Enabling Video Recording

Video recording is configured in **Proctor Settings**:

1. Navigate to Proctor Settings
2. Go to the **Video Recording** tab
3. Enable **Video Recording**
4. Configure quality and options
5. Save

<Note>
  Video recording applies to all proctored quizzes when enabled. You cannot enable it per-quiz.
</Note>

## Configuration Options

### Video Quality

| Quality    | Resolution | Typical Size (30 min) |
| ---------- | ---------- | --------------------- |
| **Low**    | 480p       | 7-12 MB               |
| **Medium** | 720p       | 15-25 MB              |
| **High**   | 1080p      | 25-40 MB              |

Choose based on your storage capacity and review needs. Medium quality provides a good balance.

### Chunk Duration

Videos are recorded in chunks for reliable uploads:

| Setting        | Recommendation       | Description                                |
| -------------- | -------------------- | ------------------------------------------ |
| **30 seconds** | Unstable connections | Smaller chunks, more requests              |
| **60 seconds** | Recommended | Good balance of reliability and efficiency |
| **90 seconds** | Stable connections   | Larger chunks, fewer requests              |

Chunking ensures that if an upload fails, only a small portion needs to be re-uploaded.

### Audio Recording

| Setting           | Description                             |
| ----------------- | --------------------------------------- |
| **Include Audio** | Records microphone input with the video |

Audio can capture verbal communication that might indicate cheating, but raises additional privacy considerations.

## How It Works

### Recording Process

1. **Quiz Start**: Video recording begins when the quiz starts
2. **Continuous Capture**: Screen and webcam are combined into a single video stream
3. **Chunking**: Video is split into chunks at the configured interval
4. **Background Upload**: Each chunk uploads to cloud storage as it completes
5. **Quiz End**: Final chunk is uploaded when the quiz is submitted

### Storage

Video chunks are stored in the same cloud storage as snapshots:

```
recordings/
  └── {quiz_name}/
      └── {attempt_id}/
          ├── chunk_001.webm
          ├── chunk_002.webm
          └── chunk_003.webm
```

## Reviewing Recordings

### Accessing Video

1. Navigate to the quiz submission
2. Look for the **Recording** section
3. Click to play the video

### Video Player Features

* **Play/Pause**: Standard playback controls
* **Seek**: Jump to any point in the recording
* **Playback Speed**: Speed up review (1x, 1.5x, 2x)
* **Anomaly Markers**: Jump to moments when anomalies were detected

### Synchronized View

When available, the video player synchronizes with:

* **Snapshot Timeline**: See snapshots at corresponding video timestamps
* **Anomaly Log**: Click anomalies to jump to that moment in the video

## Storage Considerations

Video recording significantly increases storage requirements:

| Quiz Duration | Low Quality | Medium Quality | High Quality |
| ------------- | ----------- | -------------- | ------------ |
| 15 minutes    | 3-6 MB      | 7-12 MB        | 12-20 MB     |
| 30 minutes    | 7-12 MB     | 15-25 MB       | 25-40 MB     |
| 60 minutes    | 14-24 MB    | 30-50 MB       | 50-80 MB     |

### Estimating Storage Needs

```
Monthly Storage = Students × Quizzes × Avg Duration × Quality Size
```

Example: 500 students × 4 quizzes × 30 min × 20 MB = 1.2 TB/month

## Technical Requirements

### Student Requirements

* Modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge)
* Stable internet for chunk uploads
* Sufficient upload bandwidth (\~1-2 Mbps)

### Browser Compatibility

| Browser | Video Recording Support |
| ------- | ----------------------- |
| Chrome  | Full support            |
| Firefox | Full support            |
| Edge    | Full support            |
| Safari  | Limited support         |

## Troubleshooting

### Recording not starting

* Verify video recording is enabled in Proctor Settings
* Check that storage is properly configured
* Ensure the student granted screen sharing permission

### Chunks failing to upload

* Check internet connectivity
* Verify storage credentials are valid
* Reduce chunk duration for unstable connections

### Video quality issues

* Ensure adequate lighting for webcam
* Check that screen resolution isn't too high for selected quality
* Verify sufficient upload bandwidth
